DISCOVER RIVER HILLS

River Hills Club was officially founded in 1964 by Slew Hester and a couple of Jackson businessmen, whose dream it was to build a first-class tennis facility. From the club’s inception, it has been the premier tennis club in Mississippi. Boasting a total of 21 outdoor and 4 indoor tennis courts, the club has since become a first-class swimming and fitness center as well. In 2006, River Hills Club began a huge capital improvement program, which included the total rebuilding of our tennis courts and the erection of a 26,000 sq ft clubhouse patterned after a Louisiana plantation home.

Perfectly situated for easy access, River Hills Club provides an excellent meeting place for professional groups to hold formal or informal functions and provides an absolutely beautiful venue for wedding receptions and other gatherings, both large and small.

In addition to the beautiful facilities and campus, River Hills prides itself on outstanding food and service. We are proud of our employees, most of whom have been with the club for many years.

Coach Lawrence to Lead Lady Raiders Volleyball
Jackson area native Christina Lawrence will lead the Lady Raiders as head volleyball coach in the upcoming season. Lawrence began playing volleyball in the seventh grade in Mississippi. She joined the Lady Barons of Franciscan University in Ohio in 2012, serving as captain in 2015-16. In 2015, Franciscan University Athletics named Lawrence Most Valuable Player. She completed a bachelor of arts in communication arts with a concentration in radio and television in May of 2016.

Laurence will coach volleyball, teach one to two classes, and support projects of the Marketing & Communications staff. “I’m so excited about joining the family at Jackson Academy. I’m impressed by the culture of JA, by the loyalty of the community, and by the student-centered focus of the faculty and staff,” she said. “I’m excited to offer my coaching ability and mentoring to the volleyball team and to learn as much as I can from the notable staff around me.”

coach-weemsCoach Weems Prepares for Upcoming Football Season at JA
The familiar sounds of preseason running and conditioning have been emanating from Raider Field. One new sound is the well-seasoned voice of JA’s varsity head football coach, Larry Weems. Weems brings 40 years of coaching experience to the Raiders, with 20 of those years as a head coach. The Raiders will begin official football practice the last week of July.

“Coach Weems shares our ideals of inspiring young men to reach their potential and lead lives of purpose. We believe he is a great fit for the job to ensure not only the success of the program but even more importantly, that our mission as a school continues to be fulfilled through the program,” said David Sykes, JA athletic director.

Weems most recently served as head football coach for Meridian High School where he led the team to a 107-31 record. His teams appeared in playoffs each of 10 seasons, earning the state championship in 2008 and runner-up in 2006 and 2010. As head football coach at Pearl High School from 2000-2006, he led teams to five consecutive state play-off appearances. Earlier this year, Weems was named as one of five inductees into the Mississippi Association of Coaches’ Hall of Fame. Weems holds a master’s degree in secondary administration from the University of Southern Mississippi and a master’s degree in education from Mississippi State University, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree.

Coach Weems is taking effective strategies from his experience in other settings and blending those with the knowledge of the assistant coaches who are familiar with JA traditions. Together they will craft a program that will be in the best interest of students. “In my first few months here I have spent time observing. It is important to understand a school’s culture and way of doing things before making changes. My recommendations to strengthen our football and athletic programs are ones that will continue to help our student athletes be as successful as they can be,” said Weems. His approach includes a philosophy of inspiring students to maximize their potential in life by working hard, doing what is right, and having fun.

BELLWETHER CHURCH NEWS

Summer is full of comings and goings at Bellwether church. We held our first ever Vacation Bible School last week. We had over 75 kids aged 2-11 who came in all week to the theme of Jesus is the Light of the World. Each day, they heard Jesus gives us direction, hope, courage, love, and strength. Several kids were from our church, yet many were outside the church. We intentionally invite the children around LeFleur East. VBS is tied to a 2016 Bellwether theme – “Love Your Neighbor.” We want to love our neighbors in the surrounding homes and streets of LeFleur East. Our corner is our ground zero for mission to the world. We look forward to continuing this VBS tradition for many years to come to love our neighbors.

Also connected to “Love Your Neighbor” is a partnership with Spann Elementary School. Although it’s summer, our church is active bringing lunch to the teachers and administrators as well as donating computers, basketballs, volleyballs, books, iPads, printers, a mini-refrigerator, and much more. This is just the beginning. We want to bless the students there as we grow this partnership.

A global vision is big part of Bellwether’s mission. We are sending a team of 30 to Honduras this summer. Bellwether has gone to Honduras through Salt and Light Ministry (based here in Jackson) since the church’s founding in 2008. Teams travel to build houses, schools, churches, do VBS, conduct pastor’s training, preach in churches, and do medical ministry. In the midst of vacations and summer camps, this is an opportunity to be counter cultural by doing cross cultural ministry to the poor in Honduras. All are welcome to go with us. Please let us know if you would like to take this journey in years to come. Our team departs July 7 and returns July 14. Pray for us!

Bellwether also will be supporting Ignite Sports Camp from July 21-24 at Twin Lakes in Florence, MS. This camp is for teenage boys 13-19 years old. There are limited spots available at $195. Also, Ignite is in need of additional male volunteers and financial partners to help provide scholarships ($300 each) for campers. If you are interested, please email Chris Kellum at chris@hod.world. You can find additional info at www.hod.world.

Bellwether is here for our LeFleur East Neighbors. For more about our church, go to www.bellwetherchurch.org.
